October 3, 2017

Hi, our names are Carson Pence and Madison Robinson.

We are students at UNC coordinating a one-day outreach program for our campus organization called FEMMES (Females Excelling More in Math, Engineering, and Science). FEMMES allows young women in grades 4-6 in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities to participate in multiple activity-based presentations covering topics in STEM fields. In light of our success in recent years, we are proud to host our ninth annual event this fall.

FEMMES is an interdisciplinary experience for girls that emphasizes hands-on learning and encourages their future professional presence in technical fields, particularly those in which women have been characteristically absent or underrepresented. It is free for campers to attend. By working alongside female student volunteers and faculty members, we hope to demonstrate that women can and do excel in these fields.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, November 4th from 9 to 3  in Brooks/Sitterson hall on the UNC campus. We’re looking for individuals or teams of female faculty who would be willing to volunteer from 8:45AM-3PM on that day. Each faculty volunteer directs a hands-on activity that shows something interesting and fun about their area of expertise. The faculty volunteers will be asked to lead five 40-minute sessions of the hands-on activity for groups of 15-20 campers. Student volunteers are also available to help with the preparation and execution of activities as well as the direction of campers among designated rooms. A more detailed schedule will be determined upon your feedback!

Faculty volunteers are crucial to the success of FEMMES. We are looking for women who are passionate about their fields and will be enthusiastic about making this a memorable experience for the students in attendance. The number of volunteers also dictates how many young women we will be able to host. We would very much appreciate your participation and expertise!

Please let us know by either email (uncfemmes@gmail.com) or phone whether you would be willing to present a hands-on science or mathematics activity. Additionally, if you know of a colleague who would be willing to volunteer, please pass along this email. We look forward to hearing from you!
